SUDBURY NORTH STARS CLINCH THE COMMISSIONER'S CUP
On their 16th regular season game , the Sudbury North Stars , now at 14-2-0 clinched first place and the Commissioner's Cup . This now gives the team a direct bye to the semis the second round of the 2010 playoffs . The game had a playoff atmosphere about it and not surprising since the season ending playoff round is only about three weeks away . Both pitchers , John Ainslie of the North Stars and Matt Tobobundung of the Parry Island Hawks (they won the Commissioner's Cup in 2009 ) were at their best supported by excellent defense both in the infield and the outfield .. Some timely hitting combined with strong base running helped the cause of both teams .The North Stars took a 3 to 1 lead into the third inning after scoring a pair of runs in the opening frame and a single in the second . The Hawks added their second run in the 4th inning to make it a close one run ball game . The Hawks score two big runs in the top of the sixth on the clutch hitting double of short stop Craig Brown . In the bottom of the seventh , Matt Tobobundung strikes out the first batter up for the North Stars but then the next two are walked putting the winning run on second base following a double steal . A costly overthrowing error to third base in an effort to tag out the runner off the base winds up in the left field to score the tying and winning run . Ainslie went the distance in picking up his 11th win of the season against 2 losses in allowing 4 runs (all earned) on 11 hits while striking out 6 batters and not issuing a single base on balls . Matt Tobobundung (4-4) suffered the loss , his fourth of the season allowing 5 runs (2 unearned in the costly bottom of the seventh ) on 9 hits while fanning 6 batters and issuing 3 base on balls . Craig Brown of the Hawks led the way in a losing cause going 3 for 4 (double , triple , 2 runs batted in ) with teammate Richard Jason going 23 for 4 (run scored , RBI) .Dwight Beers hit 1 for 3 (triple) for the North Stars . We will have a photo of this year's 2010 Commissioner's Cup winners , the Sudbury North Stars in Tuesday's write up . This was the nightcap .
In the opener which only lasted the minimum 5 innings , the Pickerel River Cardinals behind the fine pitching of Alex Ashawasagai (1-0) , his first full outing of the season dumped the last place Whitefish Lake Steelers 12-5 .The game was called because of the 7 run mercy rule . Alex gave up 5 runs (4 were earned) on 9 hits while striking out 3 batters and issuing but one single base on balls . Danny Nootchtai (0-4) suffered his 4th mound victory of the season giving up 12 runs (11 earned) on 11 hits while fanning 2 batters and issuing 2 base on balls . Ed Panamick Jr , Cardinals (soon to be a first time father) led all hitters going a perfect 3 for 3 (2 doubles ,3 runs scored ,RBI ) .Teammate Earl Contin went 2 for 3 (home run [his first of the season], 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in ) . Misadice Rice on a tear of late hit 2 for 3 (double ,run scored ,RBI ) in a losing cause for the Steelers .
Attached is a action photo from Wednesday night's first game between the Cardinals and the Steelers . The batter is Misadice Rice of the Steelers , the catcher is Kevin Flood of the Cardinals and the plate umpire is Chris Peters .
Play resumes tonight in Garson at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park when the Cardinals of Pickerel River take on the Hounds of Garson at 7 PM and that will be followed by the nightcap under the lights scheduled for 9 PM when the Whitefish Lake First Nation do battle with the Parry Island Hawks .

If fastball is said to be a pitchers' game, someone forgot to inform the Rick MacDonald Memorial Fastball League crew last Thursday night. The double-header at Lorne Brady Park in Garson would see no less than 33 runs cross the plate as a large percentage of hitters were clearly "zoned in" on the target.
The young and rapidly improving Whitefish Lake Steelers continued to flex their offensive muscles of late, pounding the second place Garson Hounds 10-3 with an impressive 14-hit attack. Leading the way at the plate were Justin Nootchtai (3/3 - double, triple and RBI), Misadis Rice (2/4 with a double), Owen Peltier (2/4 - double, home run, 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs) and winning pitcher Al Guenette (2/3 with a double).
Dan Quesnel ripped a pair of hits in a losing cause for the Hounds as the pitching tandem of starter Doug Foley and reliever Mac Ruddy could never really get untracked. Mind you, the damage was mild compared to the nightcap as the Parry Island Hawks register the largest run-scoring output of the season, thumping the Pickerel River Cardinals 16-4.
Walter Tobobundung Jr smashed a pair of doubles as part of his three-hit evening while Craig Brown, Matt Tobobundung, Eric Legendre, Dana Judge, Rich Jason, Adam Judge and Frank Pegahamagabow all finished with two hits apiece in a 20-hit Parry Island onslaught. The Hawks led by just one run, 5-4 after the first, but added another 5-spot in the second, matching that again in the fourth in routing the Cards.
Matt Tobobundung had little to complain about when it came to offensive support in chalking up his 5th win of the season, while Ed Brennan took the loss before giving way to Alex Ashawasagai and Pat Brennan Jr in later innings.

Craig Brown leads the way as Hawks clinch third
2010-08-10
by Randy Pascal
Shortstop turned pitcher Craig Brown showed little rust with the positional change, allowing one run on seven hits and going 3/3 at the plate as the Parry Island Hawks clinched third place in league standings with a 9-1 drubbing of the Whitefish Lake First Nation Steelers.
Al Guenette ( 3-4) started for the Steelers, eventually giving way to Henry Nootchtai in the fourth. The tandem surrendered nine runs on 16 hits as Rich Jason (2/3 - HR, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) and Walter Tobobondung Sr (2/3) joining Brown in leading the Hawks offense. Brown also tied a league record that was established last week by Dan Quesnel (Garson Hounds), stealing four bases in a single game.
Lance Curry joined in the fun for the Hawks, slamming an inside the park home run for his first round-bagger of the season. Al Guenette slashed a pair of hits in losing cause for the Steelers. Earlier in the evening, the Garson Hounds squeezed out a 4-3 victory over the slumping Pickerel River Cardinals as pitcher Eric Abitong struck out 11 in recording his third win of the year.
Opposing chucker Ed Brennan (0-4) also went the distance, allowing nine hits while striking out three. On a tear of late at the plate, Eric Ace added three more hits and a pair of RBIs to his stats, while pitcher Abitong helped his own cause, going 2/2 with a double and two runs scored. Pat Brennan Jr belted a double for the Cardinals, who will attempt to break out of a tailspin against the top-ranked Sudbury North St

In the extra frame the Steelers scored three runs and held on for a 7-5 victory and a 2-1 series win . SUDBURY NORTH STARS WIN THE NORTHERNS
Following a great emotional ceremony on Friday night ,the first day of the tournament , the games got underway .On that very Friday evening , the color party from the Lockerby Legion led the players and the officials into the ball field area . The players were introduced and then on bag pipes we heard Amazing Grace and held a moment of silence in memory of our good friend Brad Rienguette who died last year at the age of 50 after a long courageous battle with pancreatic/liver cancer . Ralph Rienguette ,Brad's dad , threw out the first ceremonial pitch to open the tournament . Throughout the tournament ,tickets were sold on a 50/50 as well as a raffle for 7 different donated gifts .Part of the proceeds in both will be given to the Cancer Society in Brad's name and another amount to the Lalonde family who lost their home to a fire last weekend in Copper Cliff . The tournament committee thank the wonderful fans on the weekend for their generosity in contributing to both of these .
Here are the results of the round robin games played sometimes in in climate weather on both Friday and Saturday (attached documents).Final round robin standings(attached)

CHAMPIONSHIP
RIVER DAWGS VS SUDBURY NORTH STARS
It seemed fitting that last year's finalists met once more for the championship final (the 5th edition .As expected they did not disappoint the large crowd that came out to see some mighty fine fastball . It was for a good part a pitcher's duel between Eric "E-man" Abitong and Corey Stolar .Both had faced each other several times in league play and in tournaments . The North Stars scored four important runs in the bottom of the 2nd frame and seemed well on their way but just one inning later two crucial fielding errors by the North Stars gave two runs to the Dawgs who were right back in the game .In the top of the 5th , the River Dawgs tie the game at 4-4 .Not to be denied and almost as if the Brad "the sham " was shinning on them , the North Stars collect 3 key runs and hold on for a 7-5 victory and the crown of the 5th Annual Northern Ontario "Brad Rienguertte" Men's Fastball Championship . Playoff Drama marks Fastball Semi Finals
2010-08-26
by Randy Pascal
If post-season play is supposed to bring out the best in teams, then give full marks to the final four in the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League. A pair of semi-final encounters Wednesday night in Whitefish produced a pair of games that were close to the very end.
The opener would see the Sudbury North Stars looking to sweep aside the Garson Hounds, earning a berth in the league finals for a fifth consecutive year. Despite an outstanding season for the Stars, it was a pretty safe bet the Hounds were not about to walk quietly into the night.
It would take extra innings, but a four run outburst in the top of the eighth does the trick as Sudbury outlasts Garson 9-7, moving one step closer to the league crown. The teams were tied at four after three innings of play, trading runs again in the seventh and setting the stage for the extra inning drama.
John Ainslie picks up his second win of the post-season, scattering 10 hits over eight innings of work, while Eric Abitong was tagged with the loss, also going the distance. Joel Belanger (2/4 – double and two RBIs) and John Ainslie (2/5) paced the North Stars’ attack, while Robbie Edwards slapped a pair of hits for the Hounds.
The second semi-final may not have required extra innings, but a third and deciding game will be needed. Trailing 1-0 in the best of three series, the Parry Island Hawks force a rubber match with the Whitefish Lake First Nation Steelers, chalking up a 5-3 victory.
The Hawks managed all of their scoring in a third inning rally, building up a 5-0 lead and holding the hard charging Steelers late in the game. Matt Tobobondung picked up his third win of the playoffs, tossing a tidy five hitter while striking out nine.
Al Guenette took the loss, giving way to Henry Nootchtai in the fifth. Percy Tobobondung and Jim Pawis finished with two hits apiece for the Hawks, while Rick Nootchtai belted a double as part of a two-hit effort in a losing cause.
The third and deciding game in the Parry Island/Whitefish Lake series is set for next Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m. in Whitefish.

Brown helped his own cause by going 3 for 3 at the dish ( 3 runs scored , 4 stolen bases to tie the league record for one game just established last week by Dan Quesnel of the Hounds ) with teammate Rich Jason hitting 2 for 3 (home run ,2 runs scored , 2 RBI's) and Walter Sr Tobobondung also hitting 2 for 3 ( run scored ,RBI ) .
