60 YEARS AND GROWING

When ball players from four different teams of the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League hit the ball diamond on Whitefish Lake First Nation come this Wednesday May 25th , it will be the jubilee anniversary of fastball in Greater Sudbury going back to 1951 . In those early days , there  were only two sports for the people to appreciate that of hockey in the Winter season and fastball in the Summer . Back in the day during my younger years and teen days there were no less than 30 to 40 fastball teams in the region . It was great fastball to observe and appreciate . In the day the crowds were large at no less than 500 for each game . Silver collection would help pay for the umpires and the minor officials (scorekeepers) . Mostly Queens Athletic field (backstop where the present day concession booth is) and O’Connor Park were used . Later after the loss of these excellent sites all games were played at the Sudbury Stadium where the present day Data Centre stands . I remember walking from the Flour Mill to Queens than I became in my teen and early adult years the scorekeeper and play by play man at O’Connor Park .Through the late 80’s and early 90’s fastball deteriated somewhat but it has slowly returned where the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball is in tact for its 20th season .You can come and see games in doubleheaders (7 and 9 PM) in Azilda at the Rick McDonald Memorial Fields in Azilda on Mondays'; at the Lorne Brady Memorial Park in Garson on Thursdays and at the Whitefish Lake First Nation Field on Wednesdays . If you come out you won’t be disappointed  and be in for a treat . The four teams in action this year are the defending champions the Sudbury North  Stars under the direction of Junior Ilnitski ;the Garson Hounds with Bryan Welsh ;the Pickerel River Cardinals with Ed Panamick and Pat Brennan Junior  and finally the Whitefish Lake First Nation Falcons . If you’re out there you might catch me for some schedules and questions . Later this Summer the league will be hosting the 6th annual All Star game .the Rick McDonald tournament on the weekend of June 10th and the Northern Ontario Fastball Championship on the third weekend of August .

Keep fit  !   Have Fun !  See you on the fastball diamonds !

Yours in fastball ,

Celebrating a new season of fastball action
2011-05-31
by Randy Pascal

It was a double anniversary, of sorts, for the Rick MacDonald Memorial Fastball League last Wednesday night in Whitefish Lake. Not only was the local loop celebrating its 20th anniversary, but 2011 is also the jubilee anniversary of the sport in the Nickel Basin, with recorded play dating back some sixty years now.

The game may not look the same as it did in 1951 when play was contested at both Queen's Athletic Field and O'Connor Park, but there were some interesting matchups as the new season of ball got underway.

In the opener, a costly error in the fifth inning helped the Pickerel River Cardinals mount a comeback, defeating the Swicky Hounds (Garson) by a final count of 5-4. Pitchers Jonathan Contin of the Cardinals and Gary Lamothe of the Swicky Hounds both went the distance, with Contin allowing five hits and three walks while striking out nine.

Lamothe countered by scattering five hits and also fanning nine, all while issuing only one base on balls. Ed Brennan led the way offensively for Pickeral River, going 2/3 while teammate Earl Contin chipped in with a solo home run.

Adam King also enjoyed a 2/3 game at the plate in a losing cause for the Hounds. In the nightcap, the defending league champion Sudbury North Stars picked up where they left off in 2010, trouncing the Whitefish Lake First Nation Falcons 15-6.

The North Stars scored 10 runs in the middle frames and never looked back, winning handily. John Ainslie, the league's top pitcher last year, tossed a neat seven-hitter, walking one and striking out five.

Meanwhile, the Falcons were forced to use three pitchers, attempting to slow down the North Stars onslaught. Henry Nootchtai started the game and was tagged with the loss after being pulled in the fourth inning.

Danny Nootchtai did not survive the frame before giving way to Troy Nootchtai as Sudbury pounded out 18 hits against the bewildered trio. Terry Kutchke led the way for the winners, recording a perfect night at the plate (4/4 - all singles, 4 runs scored and 3 RBIs), with teammate Mike Cain scoring three times on a pair of hits.

Justin Nootchtai was 2 for 3 (single, solo home run and 2 runs scored) in a losing cause for the Falcons. Play continues throughout the year, with teams competing Mondays in Azilda, Wednesday in Whitefish and Thursday in Garson.
