GREAT TIME HAD IN ELK LAKE

Elk lake had ten teams from across Ontario that featured a pitcher who pitched at the national level for team Canada.  Cory Stollar pitched a gem in the semi-final for the Welsh Junior’s as they played the Local Hero’s from Ottawa.  The game was 1-0 Ottawa until the bottom of the six when the Local Hero’s scored three times to take the game 4-0.  In the second Semi Final Windsor took on the Friends of Elk Lake (coached by Derrick Pinkerton), a close game but eventually won by the Friends of Elk Lake.  The final was not played as the rains came in making  what would have been a great championship matched up impossible to play.  The Rick McDonald fastball league was represented well as Gary Lamothe (of the Garson Hounds) played for the Elk Lake Legends team who lost in the quarter finals to the Friends of Elk Lake.  Pickerel River went one for two in the round robin but fell to the Welsh Junior’s in the quarter final. A great turn out of teams and talent this year with all ten teams pledging to come back, Elk Lake looks to expand the tournament next year to include more teams.  Just a reminder that Elk Lake will be the site for the Live Broadcast of Sportscentre on TSN August 30, thank you to all  who voted.

The semi finals :

Semi final  "B"        Curve Lake   VS    North Shore Rebels

This was without a doubt the best game of the tournament with the top two pitchers facing each other in the persons of Darren Zack of the Rebels and Ian Knott of Curve Lake . In the opening frame , the Rebels score the only run on a base hit and Curve Lake fielding error .There is no scoring for the next two frames . In the fourth inning , Curve Lake scores their run on two base hits (single ,double ) and a wild pitch .We now have a tie game at 1-1 .Once gain for the next three frames there is no scoring and both starting pitchers have combined to give up but 9 hits while fanning 19 batters . We are now going to extra innings with the international tie breaker where the inning starts with a runner on second base . The North Shore boys score a single run on a base hit (double) and now takes this 2-1 lead to the bottom of the 8th . Curve Lake comes up to bat  where the lead off strikes out , the second batter reaches first on a fielding error putting runners on the corners . At this point the next batter hits a squeeze bunt to score the runner from third (the game is tied at 2-2) with still only one out , the ball still is alive-the catcher throws the ball to second moving the runner to third who then continues his running journey scoring the winning run with a fabulous slide at home . Curve Lake moves on to the championship final with a thrilling come from behind victory of 3-2 in one extra inning .

Semi final  "A"        Wyevale Tribe   VS   Rez Ryders

In this second semi final , the Ryders scored two runs in the opening frame and never looked back on their way to thumping of the Wyevale Tribe 9 to 1 . Their biggest outburst was in the 4th inning when they busted out to score 4 more runs and at that point lead 7 to 1 . The Ryders pounded out starting pitcher Cory Stolar of the Tribe for 16 hits .  Calen Keeshig went all the way for the Ryders giving up but one single run (earned) on 6 base hits while striking out 2 batters and issuing 2 base on balls .

C hampionship final                                 Curve Lake   VS M Rez Ryders

Ian Knott was in a zone to start off this final game as he only gave up 2 runs in his four innings of work on 3 hits while striking out 4 batters and not issuing a single base on balls . His only major blemish was giving up a solo shot off the bat of Lyle Baiboncowai , catcher for Ryders in the second frame . Not surprisingly , Knott gave way to his young seventeen yearl old protégé  Ryley Capalbo in the fifth.Capalbo faced 9 batters and not one of them reached base while he struck out four of them and the remaining five outs were all infield outs . The final score was 7 to 2 for Curve Lake . Twenty year old Casey Abitong went the distance for the Rez Ryders and he gave up all seven runs ( three unearned) on 8 hits while fanning 4 batters and issuing but one single base on balls . Had it not been 4 costly errors by his teammates , the score might have been much closer .Members of the winning team were :  Aaron Trude , Jarrett Taylor , Jordan McCue , Justin Taylor , Ryan McCue , Eric Knott , Brydon McCue , Ian Knott , Ryley Capalbo ,Will Jones  and Dick Rose

Curve Lake takes top spot at Sagamok Fastball Tournament
2010-08-02
by Randy Pascal

A different set of teammates, but the same result in the end for fastball pitcher Ian Knott. The well-known ISC (International Softball Congress) hurler makes it back to back titles at the Sagamok Fastball Tournament, helping to lead Curve Lake to a championship this time around.

Despite attracting only five teams to the event, the presence of both Ian Knott and Hall of Fame pitcher Darren Zack provided a huge level of interest to the Manitoulin Island competition. Following is a brief recap of the round robin portion of tournament play:

Preliminary Round Games

North Shore Rebels 14
Sagamok Chiefs 3
(WP - Eric Abitong with a 4-hitter)

Sagamok Rez Ryders 8
Sagamok Chiefs 1
(WP - Casey Abitong with a 3-hitter)

North Shore Rebels 3
Wyevale Tribe 1
(WP - Darren Zack with a 3-hitter and 14 strikeouts)

Sagamok Rez Ryders 4
Curve Lake 2
(WP - Caleb Keeshig pitches a 7 hitter)

Wyevale Tribe 5
Sagamok Chiefs 1
(WP - Cory Stolar with a two-hitter)

Curve Lake 7
North Shore Rebels 2
(WP - Ian Knott with a 2-hitter and nine strikeouts)

Wyevale Tribe 8
Sagamok Rez Ryders 6
(WP - Mike Kelly scatters seven hits)

Curve Lake 9
Sagamok Chiefs 0
(WP - Riley Capalbo registers a one-hit shutout)

Curve Lake 4
Wyevale Tribe 2
(WP - Ian Knott with a 6-hitter, striking out 13)

Sagamok Rez Ryders 4
North Shore Rebels 3
(WP - Caleb Keeshig - 4 hits and 16 strikeouts)

Semi-final action provided the fans easily with their money's worth as Darren Zack and Ian Knott go pitch for pitch. The North Shore Rebels and Curve Lake are tied 1-1 after seven innings of play, with Zack and Knott combining for 19 strikeouts as the contest heads to extra innings.

The international tie-breaker is in effect (teams start the inning with a runner at second base*), with the Rebels plating one run in the top of the 8th to grab a 2-1 lead. But a well-executed squeeze bunt by the home side in the bottom of the frame creates a little havoc, allowing both the game-tying and game-winning runs to score as Curve Lake pulls out a 3-2 victory.

Things were not nearly as dramatic in semi-final # 2 as the Sagamok Rez Ryders score twice in the opening frame and continue to pour it on, thumping the Wyevale Tribe 9 to 1. The Rez Ryders threatened in almost every frame, scoring four times in the fourth and pounding pitcher Cory Stolar of the Tribe to the tune of 16 hits. Caleb Keeshig went all the way for the Ryders, giving up just one run on 6 base hits.

Off to the championship affair, where the Curve Lake tandem of Ian Knott and Ryley Capalbo were not to be outdone. A solo home-run by Lyle Baiboncowai provided the only real damage for the host club as Knott surrenders two runs over four innings, Capalbo does not allow a single runner to reach base in relief and Curve Lake cruises to a 7-2 triumph.

Members of the winning team were Aaron Trude, Jarrett Taylor, Jordan McCue, Justin Taylor, Ryan McCue, Eric Knott, Brydon McCue, Ian Knott, Ryley Capalbo, Will Jones and Dick Rose.
