    Far be it from the truth that officiating a game in any sport is an easy task. You must work at memorizing the rules , be properly attired , get to games on time and preprep with you partner or partners prior to the start of the game. In umpiring you have the added responsability to check the proper conditions of the field and the legality of the bats being use by the players. Just prior to the first pitch being thrown out , you have your plate conference and then on with the game. Throughout the game you must confir and communicate with you partner often by silent signals.

    Here in the  Greater City of Sudbury under the tutalage of local umpire in chief Larry Pedersen with the help of deputy umpire in chief for the zone 11 junior development program Shayne Malone , our men in blue do a fine job . All of them strive to improve their on field skills and aspire to climb up in their level of umpiring through the writing of their exams on a yearly basis , attend the required clinics and be evaluated on the field both for the bases and the plate. Bob Sherman , Chris Peters , Eric Legendre , Paul Boutin , Ben Peters , Larry Pedersen and myself Roger Legendre patrol the following fields of Selkirk ,Downe ,Twin Forks and Azilda #2 out of the Rick McDonald Memorial Park  in officiating girls softball in squirts ,bantam and midget games. Shayne Malone , Rolly Arseneault ,Richard Chartrand , Chris Peters and Larry Pedersen do the same at the Rick McDonald Memorial Park's Azilda # 3 field and at Garson's Lorne Brady Memorial Park  for the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League.

           Any day of the week come out and see these blue men in action , who take their job seriously with pride . You might like what you see , you might get the itch and get the desire to officiate. We are always looking for new umpires to lighten the burden of our present crew who not only officiate locally but go out of town for tournaments and cover the local tournaments as well.

          Each week we will be covering two or three rules of the game which we'll discuss with Larry and Shayne . Look us up next week for the first of these forums.
